Terma gallery introduces the visitor to the main forms, concepts, and meanings of classical Bhutanese art. Visitors are invited to explore an elegant selection of high-quality Bhutanese thangka paintings and Himalayan bronze sculptures created by renowned artists.
The exhibitions employ a concise and informative approach to convey the principal notions inherent in the rich traditions of Bhutanese arts and crafts. A thangka (hanging scroll painting) serves as an important teaching tool depicting the life of the Buddha, various influential Lamas (saints) and other deities and bodhisattvas.
In addition to thangka paintings, sculptures, objects such as a stupa, and ritual implements demonstrate that their patrons sought the accumulation of merit and hoped for wealth, long life, and spiritual gains, all to be fulfilled through the ritual use of these objects and commissioning works of art.
